Alice Portnoy

About This Project

I started making jewellery 16 years ago, after retiring from my job as a marketing manager.

I come from a very creative family (both my brother and sister are artists) and have always been good with my hands, creating ceramic pieces and designing and making clothes. I decided to enroll in jewellery course at Westminster Adult education and found my perfect creative outlet, eventually achieving a BTEC level 3 in jewellery. Additional courses at City Lit followed, giving me the confidence to start selling my work.in

Making jewellery is one of my great joys and talking to people about the processes I use is a pleasure.  I like classic designs and geometric shapes. I combine gold and silver using an ancient process called Keum Boo and heat and melt silver using a process called reticulation. I use Sterling silver, fine silver and Argentium silver to create a full jewellery range. The majority of my pieces are one off and if I do repeat a design at a customer’s request, I vary it slightly.

I was delighted to have one of my pieces selected for display at the V and A when they ran their Inspired By Competition.  Although I have a website and do sell from it, I prefer face to face selling and primarily sell my work at Craft Fairs in London.
